Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for QuadCore Produced at Kingspan’s Modesto Facility

As part of its continuing but unsuccessful campaign to pressure Kingspan to agree to its demands to deal with it, the SMART labor union has alleged that a Kingspan EPD for QuadCore insulated metal panels (IMPs) manufactured at the Modesto, California facility “makes no mention of operations in two of the Modesto factory’s three buildings where QuadCore panels are manufactured or finished.”

The EPD that the SMART labor union is referencing is SCS-EPD-08097. As the EPD makes clear, it covers certain IMP products that are specifically identified in the EPD – Designwall 4000, KS Series, and Optimo.

As the EPD describes, those products are manufactured using a continuous in-line process, which is only possible in one of the three buildings at the Modesto site.

The other two buildings use different manufacturing processes to manufacture different products, which are explicitly excluded from the EPD.

The SMART labor union’s allegation is FALSE.

The SMART labor union also submitted a complaint regarding the EPD to SCS Global Services, the independent third-party organization which verified Kingspan’s EPD.

As its procedures require, SCS conducted an investigation into the complaint.

On May 16, 2024, SCS issued an Investigation Report, signed by SCS’s Vice President, Assurance and Enablement.

SCS concluded that the SMART labor union’s assertions about the EPD “are outside the scope of EPD verification process.”

As of May 24, 2024, SMART has not published the fact that its complaint to SCS failed.
