Testing Practices at Kingspan’s Modesto Facility

As part of its continuing but unsuccessful campaign to pressure Kingspan to agree to its demands to deal with it, the SMART labor union has alleged that in March 2023, Kingspan manufactured a special set of insulated metal panels (IMPs) at the Modesto, California facility for third-party testing, with the manufacturing not being done using the processes described in an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).  The SMART labor union’s document also alleges that only certain panels were sent for testing to the FM Research Campus in Rhode Island, an independent and respected testing organization with no ties to Kingspan.

The SMART labor union is uninformed and conspicuously does not mention facts about this testing process. At that time, the referenced IMPs were in the product development stage and were not commercially available.  Therefore, they were not included in any EPD.  As part of the development process, FM performs testing.  However, FM does not perform testing based on IMPs sent by Kingspan.

Rather, FM representatives are personally on site monitoring the manufacturing process for the actual panels that will be used for testing.  The IMPs that are sent to Rhode Island for testing are witnessed and signed by FM themselves to ensure a proper chain of custody and integrity in the testing process.

All of these facts are missing from the SMART labor union’s document.

The SMART labor union’s allegation is FALSE.
